They met over a mislabeled bronze at an auction preview in Hong Kong, and thirty years later the argument is still going. She spent her career in museum work, running an Asian department she could recite in the dark; he was foreign service, posted across Beijing and Kyoto, always the one who found the dealers nobody else knew. The terracotta sentries and lacquer cabinets are the pieces they could never part with, carried home from a life spent abroad. Crystal City surprised them both, for the light, the wall space, the way the towers curve against a pink evening sky. Evenings, one of them pours something good and turns the cabinet lights up, and friends drift from object to object the way you would through a gallery after hours. Nothing here was decorated. All of it was chosen, together.
The staging holds a gallery’s discipline in the display zones and lets every gathering space go warm and social. In the living room, the linear fire, a cognac leather sofa, forest velvet swivels, and a faded Persian rug pull the floor toward conversation rather than formality. The dining room does the collection’s work: a reclaimed oak trestle table sits directly before the vitrines, so a meal happens inside the display rather than beside it. The kitchen stays quiet and capable, deferring to the rooms it opens onto. Upstairs exhales, soft neutral bedding under one bold canvas, the crimson lacquer cabinet its single chromatic note. Three elements carry the whole: the birch-lined vitrines, individually lit and styled one confident object per shelf, turning accumulation into curation; the cedar columns left honest and glowing; and the chinoiserie lacquer, black below and crimson above, working as punctuation rather than theme.
